women and reform in Islam

the New York Times’ Sabrina Tavernise covers a conference among Muslim women interested in reform that took place this past weekend in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She quotes several women advocating Islamic reform efforts to patriarchal systems, as opposed to reform efforts using the language of secular liberalism. She also points out references to Morocco’s sweeping legal reforms of 2004, which relied heavily on both royal support and arguments and initiatives taking Islam as their inspiration, as an example of effective efforts in this direction.

A few weeks ago, the National ran this article on those reforms in Morocco, exploring their efficacy. Interestingly, they frame the issue more in terms of modernization vs. Islam than the modernization of Islam.
