Passover, whether you’re in Israel or in the Diaspora, generally connects families around the Seder table. The little ones scurry into the far reaches of the house looking for that hidden clump of cracker known for eight days as matzah. Siblings, some of which may have not seen one another all year, come together and rejoice that this holiday has brought them together. The families tell the Passover story, heralding Moses as one of the greatest leaders of the Jewish people by obtaining the ten commandments and finding the Jews a home in Israel.
Even though we drink four glasses of wine on this Passover night, some of use might need a little more assistance to cope with members of the family. And a San Francisco company is coming to the rescue. Switch out those glasses of wine for martinis, because this firm just released what it calls the first kosher for Passover gin.
Which brings me to my next point of contention with this high holiday. The ban on most corn and what products during Passover tends to hamper our eating routine, but it also throws a wrench into the cogs of our drinking habits. Most vodka’s are out. All gins are out. Tequila is gone. Bourbon and other whiskeys- forget about it. Beer- don’t make me chuckle. That leaves us with wine and rum.
This company may be filling a much-needed void for some. Me? I’ll stick to wine, although mid-way through the seder I might switch my tune.
