EU to pass legislation on illegal immigrants

EU to pass legislation on illegal immigrantsThe European Parliament is set to pass a new law in June to limit the time illegal migrants can be detained anywhere in the European Union to six months. While Socialists have argued fervently in favor of cutting this time to just three months, a majority in the parliament is set to vote in favor of this compromise. This will mark the first piece of legislation on illegal immigrants passed across all 27 member states. Protestors in Italy and Spain had been particularly vocal in voicing their opinions against what many saw as the gradual creation of Guantanamo-like situations in individual Member States.

This new law creates more legal certainty for deportations, though it is hardly a positive contribution to addressing the root causes of illegal immigration and the comprehensive response necessary to tackling a growing problem.

More on this story can be found here. We will cover the vote in the pages of this blog.
