The Daily Star editorial ‘ With all eyes on Syria as Tribunal begins, Damascus would do well to act with care’
“Although indictments have not yet been issued in the case, former and current officials in Lebanon, the United States, France and elsewhere have made no secret about the fact that they believe Damascus was responsible for the crime. One can expect that the same fingers will quickly be pointed at Syria in the event of renewed assassinations or bombings in Lebanon in the coming months. Such a situation provides ample opportunity for those who would want to force a confrontation with Damascus or to derail Syria’s current efforts to return to the international fold.”
Solution?
“The best way to ensure that this does not happen would be for Syria to boost its current level of cooperation on issues like border security with Lebanese President Michel Sleiman, as well as other actors in the international community. Improving ties with the presidency, as opposed to the Cabinet would have one relatively long-term benefit: The political makeup of the current Lebanese government could change in a few months time after this country holds parliamentary elections, but Sleiman will presumably remain in office as president for the full length of his six-year term.”
