I’ve discovered a new book to put on my reading list. If you can imagine a book about power, a book that offers advice for the U.S. on how to use power, and a book that is written in the spirit of Machiavelli’s classic The Prince, then Power Rules by Leslie Gelb may be of interest to you. It is hard to imagine a modern update of The Prince, but in this book review, Daniel W. Drezner, a professor of international politics at the Fletcher School at Tufts University and a senior editor at The National Interest, says that the author pulls it off. Drezner concludes that, “Compared to the piles of books being churned out about America’s place in the world, Power Rules belongs in the top tier. Gelb intended this book as a long letter to President Obama; I fervently hope that the intended recipient reads it carefully.” I can’t wait to read it.
