The National Prosecuting Authority decision to drop the corruption charges against Jacob Zuma is not quite yet a done deal, though signs still point to Zuma pulling yet another Houdiniesque escape. The pending charges or the decision to drop them have long represented politics by other means, deeply dividing the country and the NPA, and no matter what happens will continue to embroil South African politics and the country’s presumed next president in controversy. And the decision to drop charges might not even end the legal-political machinations.
