Best of the Web: The India-Pakistan Edition

The Congress Party wins big, while Hindu nationalists and communists lose out in the largest democratic elections in the world. And the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty keeps going and going… BBC’s vast election coverage (beaming with post-colonial pride) is worth checking out.

India’s Finance Ministry is holding a contest to see who can come up with a currency symbol that screams “India is a rising superpower—and your country is not.” Rs and INR just don’t quite say global domination like the almighty $. Let’s hope the Indians do better than the Russians and their attempt at a new national anthem.

Yes, yet another depressing news story about one of the Slumdog Millionaire kids.

Feeling frisky? The New York Times brings a rags-to-riches story of the Qadeer brothers in Karachi, Pakistan, who supply the decadent West with bondage and fetish products. The article is good, but the video is priceless. I especially loved the video interview with the 25-year-old female sales executive: “I like the fetish items. They appeal me…I can’t mention only one because I have several favorite items.” Gotta believe in the product to move the merchandise!
