Peshawar Bombing

Pakistan is awful awful awful. The bombing at PC Peshawar was a reminder, yet again, that Pakistan is actually the front line in the global struggle against the nihilist movement. Those who accuse Pakistan of not doing ‘enough’ must realize that Pakistan has done more then any other country in the world and as a consequence, the country is paying the ultimate price every single day.

The world community must realize one thing: If the terrorists kept these bombings and suicide attacks against Pakistan, the public will start listening to those who claim that the war on terror is not Pakistan’s war. And if the public’s mood changed, it would change the dynamics of war on terror. Therefore, whatever the world community is doing is not enough. They must do more, and everything must be done faster before it is too late.

There is no question that the terrorists are targeting the civilians to force the government to (a) stop the operation in Swat and other parts of N.W.F.P. against the Taliban and (b) to make it impossible for the government to continue cooperating with the Western world, especially the Americans. It is also clear that the Taliban and other terrorists would continue and quite possibly increase their attacks in the near future and as of today, there is no clear sign of victory, decisive or otherwise, against the barbaric and ruthless Taliban.

It makes complete sense that Pakistan as a county must come together to crush those who are trying to impose their hateful and misguided ideology on Pakistan in the name of Islam. The struggle against the people who consider themselves to be God’s warriors is going to be difficult and bloody. Therefore, all major political parties in Pakistan have to literally join hands against the forces of darkness. There is absolutely no room for confusion, second thoughts because we, the people who are interested in living in peace and harmony with all other religions, nations and cultures.

Yes, there are Taliban sympathizers in Pakistan, but the government as well as other social, political and cultural institutions must start a campaign to educate the masses that the Taliban are not the enemy of one particular segment of the society. They are actually the enemies of everything common sense. If ever they gained control of Pakistan, they would systematically destroy everything, i.e. education, judiciary, democracy, human rights, women’s rights, progress, freedom, and everything that comes to mind.

So, I invite everyone, in and outside Pakistan to come forward and join hands to stop the Taliban once and for all. This is not the time to sit outside.

Bilal Qureshi is a resident of Washington, DC, so it is only natural that he is tremendously interested in politics. He is also fascinated by the relationship between Pakistan, the country of his birth, and the United States of America, his adopted homeland. Therefore, he makes every effort to read major newspapers in Pakistan and what is being said about Washington, while staying fully alert to the analysis and the news being reported in the American press about Pakistan. After finishing graduate school, he started using his free time to write to various papers in Pakistan in an effort to clarify whatever misconceptions he noticed in the press, especially about the United States. This pastime became a passion after his letters were published in Vanity Fair and The New Yorker and his writing became more frequent and longer. Now, he is here, writing a blog about Pakistan managed by Foreign Policy Association.
