Today’s victory marked the first time since 1949 that the Boks had beaten the mighty All Blacks three times in a season. Between decisively winning the Tri-Nations, the premier non-World Cup international competition and their victory over the British and Irish Lions earlier this year South Africa is unquestionably the numer one team in world rugby.

Derek Catsam is a Professor of history and Kathlyn Cosper Dunagan Professor in the Humanities at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
