International donor conference for Haiti at UN

The Haitian government will present a $4 billion plan for Haiti’s reconstruction to the delegates from 120 countries meeting at the UN for an international donor conference for Haiti meeting on Wednesday, March 31st.

In the “Plan of Action” submitted by the government, some sections are dedicated to the problem of food insecurity, particularly in reference to boosting agricultural production, rebuilding and fortifying infrastructure, creating jobs through the agricultural sector and providing emergency relief for those who do not have access to food.

Before the earthquake struck,

Haiti [used] about 80 percent of its export earnings just to pay for food imports. There is less food security, which makes the country and the population in general very vulnerable to natural disasters and just as vulnerable to fluctuations in the price of basic commodities on international markets.

The government’s proposal is meant to strengthen Haiti’s vulnerabilities to food insecurity, and is intended to be implemented by Haitian government agencies, rather than international partners, as a way of rebuilding the capacity of the government and preparing them for the long-term responsibility of restoring the country.
