Consulate Bombing

A small bomb thrown over the wall of the United States Consulate in Nuevo Laredo on Friday night is recurring fears that Mexico’s drug gangs have their eyes on the US. No one was injured in the attack, but several windows were shattered. US consular offices in Nuevo Laredo and nearby Piedras Negras will be closed indefinitely.

A grenade, later traced to one of Mexico’s drug gangs, was thrown at a consulate in Monterrey in 2008. It didn’t explode.

Tensions are rising not only because of the recent shooting of shooting deaths of three people with ties to the US Embassy in Juárez, but Michelle Obama is due in Mexico City on Tuesday, her first solo trip abroad.
