Hitting the Tuesday Links

Stories that have caught my eye in recent days:

British journalist Andrew Jennings does not have much nice to say about FIFA and its dealings with South Africa for the World Cup.

On the one hand, the people of Sudan appear to have re-elected President Omar al-Bashir. On the other hand, at least Southern Sudan has beer.

The United States has pledged significant aid to Kenya for both educational efforts in advance of the referendum on the new constitution and for Hiv/AIDS prevention. (And South Africa is “redoubling” efforts against AIDS.)

Happy Freedom Day, South Africa. (For those of you interested in the struggle against Apartheid — which I’m assuming is pretty much all of you — you might want to try to track down the new epic documentary Have you heard from Johannesburg?)
