1,000

That is the grim milestone of American deaths in Afghanistan since the war began in late 2001. Though it can be argued exactly what the real total may be (some say 970, while others over 1,060) the toll our American servicemen and women have given in this fight cannot. Sadly and tellingly, American deaths have increased dramatically in the last few years of the war. Though it took approximately seven years to reach 500 casualties, it only took two years to reach 1,000. Of course, just talking about deaths would hide the many times more physical and emotional injuries that have occurred. With the convoy attack in Kabul yesterday, the Bagram base assault, and the coming operations in Kandahar the number of American deaths and injuries will surely grow.

These men and women have made tremendous sacrifices, with a 1,000 paying the ultimate, so we can enjoy freedom and prosperity here at home. It is hoped that this sacrifice will help lead to a more stable, secure, and prosperous Afghanistan for its people who themselves have gone through hardships that most of us cannot imagine. We all owe them our deepest gratitude and respect.
