Task force on hunger in Asia

With over two-thirds of the world’s hungry found in Asia, the Asia Society and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) formed a task force to examine food security issues in Asia and develop public policy approaches for overcoming hunger.

The initial findings of the task force were released last month in a report titled, “Never an Empty Bowl: Sustaining Food Security in Asia” identifying how “Population growth, increasing demand from changing diets, dwindling land and water resources for agriculture, higher energy costs, and the huge uncertainties regarding the effects of climate change present scientists and policy makers with additional challenges.”

In order to address these challenges, the report details a strategy focused on increasing efficiency of food production in the region, along with outlining how government and non-governmental agencies can support these approaches through investment and new programs.
