In light of this morning’s news of another flotilla of North African migrants approaching Lampedusa in Italy, wanted to quickly post a link (in French) to an excellent post on the generally-excellent BondyBlog, which covers issues related to inner-city France and Europe. It is a first-hand account of what leads one of these migrants to decide to leave their families behind to take a chance on the continent. The key paragraph, a 19-year-old Tunisian speaking to his distraught mother who has just learned he’s landed in Italy, translates thusly:

“The youth here has no future. Look, none of us have jobs despite all having graduated, we have no government aide, we can’t even support our family! Don’t worry, Italy can’t be worse than Tunisia.”
