Q: How much is Mladic’s arrest worth?

Answer: $1.2 billion per year. That is how much Serbia’s failure to capture the man who is accused of orchestrating the massacre at Srebrenica has cost the country in lost investment, according to government estimates. As many have noted, his arrest should now pave the way for Serbian admission to the EU (though this process usually takes about a decade). Even as polls showed 51 percent of Serbians are “against” Mladic’s arrest, 67 percent want to join the EU.

One last prominent figure from the war accused of atrocities, Goran Hadzic, remains at large — but we should not be surprised if he is soon located as well.
