The Hardest Working Man in the Nuke Business

That’s what I call Joe Cirincione, Ploughshares President – behind his back, of course.  He is the closest thing the arms control community has to a celeb – always camera-ready, always posed and always well-informed. And hey, he’s friends with Michael Douglas.

But, in all seriousness, Joe has worked tirelessly for nuclear disarmament over the course of his career, starting on the Hill, then at Carnegie, the Center for American Progress and now with Ploughshares.  He is a passionate and persuasive commentator of all things nuclear.  And, he can drink a serious amount of Russian vodka.  Trust.

Joe has just put out a paper for the New America Foundation entitled “Strategic Turn: New U.S. and Russian Views on Nuclear Weapons”. It is a terrific piece which chronicles “development of US and Russian views on nuclear weapons over the past 30 years and offers practical policy recommendations for how both nations can achieve their stated goal of reducing the role of nuclear weapons in national security strategies.”  Admittedly, Joe tends to veer a bit too far to the left for me on occasion, but he writes good stuff.

Do put it on your reading list.
