If you have followed this blog for a while you may have noticed a few posts on the subject of U.S. foreign aid (most recently: here , here , and here). I’ve mentioned it several times and so I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that the U.S. is celebrating the 50th anniversary of USAID, the primary government agency charged with providing development and humanitarian assistance throughout the world. The official announcement includes the following information:
President John F. Kennedy recognized the need to unite development into a single agency to maximize expertise. In 1961, USAID was created. Since that time, USAID has been a quiet force for progress, fostering a more peaceful and secure world. The spirit of innovation and the belief in doing the right thing have never been stronger. On Thursday, November 3rd, USAID will celebrate its 50th Anniversary hosted by USAID Administrator Raj Shah with keynote remarks by Vice President Joe Biden, special guest Caroline Kennedy, and a performance by Grammy award-winning performer Angelique Kidjo.
The event was webcast live here and I’ve imbedded the encore presentation below for those that missed it. Happy birthday USAID!
